The answer can vary quite a bit depending on the type of event, how long you need the photographer for, where the event is taking place and what you want included in the final package.
As a general guide, published Irish photography price guides currently put professional event photography at around €350 to €1,000 for half-day coverage, with around €600 being a typical midpoint. Other Irish pricing sources put general professional photography rates at approximately €80 to €300 per hour, although event photography can be priced differently because of the preparation, travel, editing and equipment involved.
What Does an Event Photographer Cost?
For a shorter event, you may only need a photographer for one or two hours. Larger events can require several hours of continuous coverage, while conferences, festivals and major public events may need a photographer for most of the day.
Some photographers charge by the hour, while others offer half-day or full-day packages. There isn’t one standard pricing structure across the industry.
For example, current published Irish event photography prices range from around €400 for two hours of corporate event photography to €900 for six hours from one Irish event photographer.
This is why it is important to look at what is included in the price, rather than simply comparing the headline figure.
My Event Photography Prices
I keep my event photography pricing straightforward.
My current rate is:
€190 for the first hour
€100 for each additional hour
These prices are for the photography coverage itself. For events further afield, I can discuss any travel requirements when preparing the quote.
For larger, unusual or multi-day events, I can also put together a bespoke quotation based on exactly what you need.
What Affects the Cost of Event Photography?
There are several things that can affect the final price of event photography.
How long you need the photographer
This is usually the biggest factor.
A photographer covering a two-hour awards ceremony has a very different workload from someone photographing a ten-hour festival. Longer events naturally require more time on site, more photographs to process and more time for preparation and delivery.
It is worth thinking about which parts of your event you actually want photographed rather than automatically booking a photographer for the entire day.
For example, if you are organising a college ball, you may want photography from the arrivals through to the main part of the evening. For a race day, you may need coverage around registration, the start, the action and the finish.
The type of event
Different events require different approaches.
A Debs Ball might involve arrivals, formal photographs, groups of friends and lots of candid photographs throughout the evening.
A charity ball could involve photographs of guests, speeches, entertainment, fundraising activities and sponsors.
A corporate event might require photographs of speakers, presentations, networking, branding, award winners and group photographs.
Race days and festivals can involve much larger areas and more movement, which can require a different approach again.
Travel
If your event is outside the photographer’s normal working area, there may be additional travel costs.

The number of photographers
For many events, one experienced photographer is enough.
However, larger conferences, festivals or events taking place across multiple locations at the same time may benefit from having more than one photographer.
For example, if you need photographs of a speaker on stage while another part of the event is happening elsewhere at exactly the same time, one photographer cannot physically be in both places.

How quickly you need the photographs
Normal event photography allows time for the photographs to be carefully selected, processed and edited before being delivered.
If you need photographs on the same day or early the following morning for social media, press or marketing, that can require a different workflow.
Some professional corporate photographers offer rush delivery or even on-site editing for events where photographs need to be available almost immediately.

What Do You Get For The Price?
Hiring an event photographer isn’t simply paying someone to turn up with a camera.
There is work involved before, during and after your event.
Before the event, I’ll discuss the schedule, locations and the type of photographs you need. On the day, I’m watching what is happening around me, looking for important moments, interactions and details rather than simply photographing the obvious parts of the event.
Afterwards, the photographs need to be reviewed, selected and professionally processed before they are delivered.
For my event photography, photographs are normally delivered through an online gallery. This makes it easy for event organisers to view the finished photographs and share them with attendees.
How Many Photographs Will You Receive?
There isn’t a fixed number of photographs that I promise for every event.
I’d rather concentrate on producing a useful collection of good photographs than trying to hit an arbitrary number.
The number of final images depends on the length and type of event. A busy three-hour college ball, for example, will naturally produce a very different gallery from a quieter two-hour corporate function.
The aim is to give you a comprehensive collection that captures the atmosphere, people and important moments from your event.
Is Cheap Event Photography Always The Best Option?
Price is obviously important when you are working with an event budget, but it shouldn’t be the only thing you compare.
When looking at different event photographers, ask what is actually included in the price.
Check:
- How many hours of photography are included?
- Is editing included?
- How will you receive the photographs?
- How long will delivery take?
- Are there additional travel charges?
- Will you receive high-resolution photographs?
- Can the photographs be shared with your guests or attendees?
- Is there a clear agreement covering the booking and delivery?
A photographer charging €100 less may initially look cheaper, but if editing, travel or other parts of the service are charged separately, the final cost may be quite different.
